THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS
Winter is looming over Barcelona.
And for many of us, instead of hibernating, we experience insomnia.
Some of us don't sleep because of the lack of affordable housing. Some of us don't, because of politics. Some of us don't sleep for many reasons more…
To share some warmth and community in these dark days, we invite you to gather every Thursday at 20:00 at the Free Music School to discuss and delve into THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS.
A book, which seems the most obvious choice.
Yes, for one, it is set on the planet Gethen – 'winter/invierno/hivern' in translation.
But apart from this so resonating setting, the book confronts us with an idea of a kind of unity, a kind of commons, with the so obvious responding questions of 'whose unity, whose commons?'
It entangles obstacles of the political/power kind with questions of (personal) belonging, expulsion, refuge. Adding speculations about who to trust, who to befriend, and the quest of how to trust and befriend when one could not be more different from another…
At our first meeting on Thursday, December 12, at 20:00 we will focus on the first three chapters:
1. A Parade in Erhenrang
2. The Place Inside the Blizzard
3. The Mad King
But don't worry, if you don't have time to read, but are interested, come!
We are going to find a way, between languages, between knowing the book by heart and not having read a single page, to explore the story of THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS, because we are doing it together!
And on a very personal end-note: In this book I met the first fictional character in my long life as a book nerd, who I fell deeply and irrevocably in love with.
